Celebrate with cake everyday

4 March 2022
Leaders need to find a way to let their team know that you are working every day to recognise and reward them. To achieve that goal they need to develop some specific actions for both reward and recognition to create their belief, and then be prepared to deliver on them relentlessly.

Most of us have a belief that we want to ‘feel good’, but, because everyone is different, we all require different things to make us feel good. What leaders need to understand is that their team members are motivated by different behaviours, with some motivated by more material things, like wealth and lifestyle, and others motivated by more emotional aspects, like fame, fear and love. There are many leaders who think it is more important to provide recognition than rewards, but in my view it is simply more important to understand how you make them feel.

Leaders need to find a way to let their team know that you are working every day to recognise and reward them. To achieve that goal they need to develop some specific actions for both reward and recognition to create their belief, and then be prepared to deliver on them relentlessly.

In my view leaders should look to find a way to ‘celebrate with cake every day’. In doing so it  will symbolise to your team that you are working every day to recognise and reward them. You need to empower your team leaders to find events and team behaviors to celebrate, like birthdays, promotions, seasonal events, team and customer incentives. Then allocate a  predetermined amount to allow a small but meaningful celebration event as and when it is deemed justifiable.

Leaders also need to find a way to pay people more for what they do. This is not that easy but can be achieved if you apply a simple philosophy: pay less people more money, not more people, less money. Leaders need to ensure that all roles within their structure are operating at full capacity and that they are prepared to hold their team accountable to deliver in a high performance environment. You need to find a way for your team to believe that if they commit to deliver continuous improvement to productivity and customer satisfaction measures they will be appropriately rewarded.

Establishing the right remuneration package for each of your team is a leadership fundamental: but I believe you need to look to go beyond that, and be able to demonstrate true generosity and recognition. You need to look to find a way to pay them above their expectations if you want them to truly believe they are valued.
